Hospital checkup for Atong Ang OK’ed

THE Sandiganbayan Special Division on Friday allowed Charlie “Atong” Ang to leave jail for a medical checkup in a hospital in Manila.

The division, chaired by Presiding Justice Teresita Leonardo-de Castro, allowed Ang to have the checkup at the Metropolitan Hospital in Sta. Cruz from 7a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday.

Ang is accused of plunder before the Court.

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology was tasked to escort Ang from the Metro Manila Detention Center in Bicutan, Taguig, to the hospital, where Ang’s doctor reportedly has a clinic.

Alfredo Villamor, Ang’s lawyer, said Ang needs the medical checkup because he suffers from an enlargement of the heart brought about by a faulty valve.

The Court did not immediately grant the plea for a medical checkup on Wednesday because the medical certificate was just signed by a nurse. --Jomar Canlas
