CEBU City: Cebuanas oppose the
plan to divide Cebu into four provinces. They presented to President
Arroyo a resolution containing their position.
The women
noted that a survey conducted in 2005 showed that majority of the
representatives of women’s groups in Cebu are not in favor of the
proposed bills seeking to divide Cebu.
The survey
results showed that 350 delegates from national government agencies,
local governments, the academe and nongovernment organizations cast
their votes and only 15 approved of the plan.
In the same
resolution, the group also adopted the Provincial Women’s
Commission as the official voice of the women in the province.
The ordinance
that created the commission is the brainchild of Provincial Board
Member Agnes Magpale, a known advocate of women and children’s
rights.
“The
Provincial Women’s Commission is the local translation of the
National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women as the provincial
machinery for the advancement of women’s rights, concerns and
issues and shall be the official voice of women in the province,”
the resolution stated.
They are also
calling all women leaders in the Province of Cebu to mobilize and
lobby for women representation in the local legislative bodies, and
the establishment of a network for genuine women empowerment in the
field of governance.
