PHILIPPINE Christian University dominated most of the
sports disciplines in the 82nd National Collegiate Athletic
Association to reclaim the overall title in the seniors division.
The Dolphins amassed 278 points
to win their second senior’s championship in three years, beating
last year’s champion the College of St. Benilde Blazers, who
finished with 198.5 points.
“Clinching the overall
championship in the NCAA is no easy venture considering the caliber
of other opponents in the league,” said PCU President Oscar
Suarez.
“Perhaps what made PCU stand
out is the strong determination of our athletes to win and their
diligence in making themselves fit for the hurdles they struggled
hard to overcome,” Suarez added.
Letran placed third with 148
points followed by San Beda College (147), San Sebastian College
(145.5), Mapua (86), Perpetual Help (62.5) and next season’s host
Jose Rizal University (13.5).
The men’s and women’s beach
volleyball teams led the Taft-based school’s top performers in
their successful bid to win back the coveted title.
During the finals, Eric Genil and
Alvin Medina defeated their Blazers counterparts, 21-18, 21-18,
while Arlene Bernardo and Cathlea Villaluz bested the pair from the
Perpetual Help Altas, 21-14, 18-21, 15-12. Genil and Bernardo both
earned Most Valuable Player honors.
