Interest-rate horizon remains bright

THE uptrend in short-term interest rates in recent weeks may alarm some people that the country’s low-interest rate environment has come to an end.

Treasury bill rates have been moving up this month. This reverses a downtrend seen since the start of the year.

Being benchmarks, T-bill rates serve as the bases for banks when pricing their loans. With the bulk of domestic funding needs sourced from banks, the rates lenders charge their borrowers determine whether consumers will spend more or less. The level of interest rates indicates whether people would take out home or auto loans, and use their credit cards.
