Sen. Edgardo Angara revealed
Wednesday his new “secret weapons” in his bid for a fourth term
in the Senate—GMA and women power.
Angara clarified that “GMA”
is not President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
“She is my wife, Gloria
Manalang Angara, the original GMA,” he said.
Angara said the voters would see
her campaign mettle when she takes his place in the campaign of Team
Unity in Bicol. He begged off from the Bicol sortie to be the
commencement speaker in a number of graduation exercises this week.
Mrs. Angara, a lover of the arts,
was former president of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and a
commissioner of the National Commission on Culture and the Arts.
More ladies would be joining
“GMA” in actively pushing for his reelection. The “Women for
Angara” was activated Monday at a meeting at the Manila Polo Club,
Makati City, with about 100 ladies from academe, the business
community and the arts pledging their total support for Angara.
“Malakas yata ang dating ko sa
mga babae [It seems I have a strong appeal among the ladies],”
Angara quipped on the number of ladies volunteering to campaign for
him.
He lauded the persuasive power of
women, and expressed confidence that the ladies would be a strong
force behind his candidacy.
The “Women for Angara” would
be joining alumni of the University of the Philippines and
Angara’s fraternity brothers at the Sigma Rho in manning the
organized campaign of the longest-serving senator today.
Angara has authored a number of
laws benefiting women, including that promoting breast-feeding.
When he was questioned by the
ladies why he seemed very interested in breasts, he replied with a
straight face: “It is not the breasts but the breast milk that I
am more interested in.”
