ILOILO CITY: Twelve barangays situated in the
mountainous towns of Iloilo have been declared prone to landslides
by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau 6 (MGB 6).
Engineer Rolly Calomarde, chief
of the MGB in Western Visayas, said because of this they have
advised residents of these areas to be vigilant especially when
there is downpour.
Those barangays have been
classified within the moderate to high-risk area. The moderate can
even be elevated to high, depending on the factors that might
trigger the occurrence of a disaster.
Included in those areas are the
seven barangays of Alimodian, which are being developed into an
ecotourism site and dubbed as “seven cities” with a climate
almost comparable to that of Baguio City.
These barangays include Cabanacan
Proper, Cabancanan Rizal, Tabug, Uminggan, Manasa, Lico and Dao.
Meanwhile, five barangays are
found in Leon town adjacent to Alimodian. These are Barangays Danao,
Bobon, Bacolod, Bucari and Camandag.
Calomarde said they have been
keeping the officials and barangays residents updated on the risk
that they have to face and have given the necessary recommendations
to mitigate the impact of any geohazard present in the area.
Areas within the moderate to
high-risk zones are those with reported landslide occurrences in the
past, the slope can be steep and there are selected movements.
Calomarde said the seven cities
of Alimodian are standing on former landslide debris. Since these
barangays are being developed as an ecotourism site, he recommended
that a thorough study and detailed assessment be done of the place.
He noted that during their
monitoring, they have discovered the presence of highly fractured
stones, siltstones, sandstones and bedded rock on the areas; thus,
they fear a landslide is inevitable.
