BEIJING: Retired judge Liao Zhaohui and
divisional court chiefs Cai Xiaoling and Zhang Tinghua were jailed
for alleged graft charges, the China Daily said in a report citing
the Shenzhen Intermediate court. The probe, which highlighted the
widespread corruption in the Chinese judicial system, unfolded after
prosecutors arrested Liao, who allegedly took bribes while Cai and
Zhang appointed certain auction houses to deal with seized assets in
bankruptcy cases. They were among the five senior judges arrested
recently after the local prosecution office investigated their
alleged acts of corruption, the report said.
PAKISTAN: Rana Bhagwandas,
a Hindu judge, along with four other senior judges, will deal with
the fate of chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, who was
suspended and charged with misconduct by the president on March 9.
Bhagwandas took over as new acting chief justice of Pakistan in the
shadow of a judicial crisis that has jolted the country’s military
leader Pervez Musharraf. The 64-year-old judge from Sindh province
replaced justice Javed Iqbal who was as acting chief judge for two
weeks as Bhagwandas was on leave to India. Bhagwandas is expected to
head a reconstituted judicial council for further hearing of the
case against Chaudhry, which is scheduled on April 3.
