Mayor Florencio Bernabe Jr. of Parañaque City
recently inaugurated the new Parañaque City Jail built on a
3,000-square-meter lot on Coastal Road, Barangay La Huerta.
The new four-story building can
accommodate 1,000 detainees. At present, there are 743 (653 male and
90 female) inmates housed in the old city jail, which has an
official capacity of only 100 detainees.
The facility is considered one of
the most modern in the country as it comes complete with toilets and
baths, a visitors area, multipurpose hall, warden’s office,
guard’s quarters, administration office, records room, armory,
kitchen and medical-dental clinics.
Built at a cost of P47.5 million,
the jail is close to the new Parañaque police headquarters and the
new central fire station both being constructed on Sucat Road.
“The new jail facility was
built by the city to replace the congested old jail and provide
inmates modern facilities and more humane living conditions,”
Bernabe said.
He added that the jail is an
important part of the city’s peace and order program, since prison
and rehabilitation facilities are part of the Five Pillars of
Justice.
“We are very proud of this new,
modern and spacious jail facility,” Bernabe said.
The transfer of inmates from the
old facility to the new city jail will be done slowly over the next
few weeks.
