Cagayan de Oro women’s
summit set this week

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: It’s all systems go for the holding of the 2007 Cagayan de Oro Women’s Summit today at the De Luxe Hotel. Cynthia B. Rosales, chairman of the City Women Development Council (CWDC), disclosed that members of Barangay Women Development Councils (BWDC), nongovernment organizations and other sectors that support programs on women empowerment would participate in the summit.

Rosales said the summit would also serve as the closing activity for the Women’s Month celebration in the city.

During the summit, BWDCs here will share their respective best practices based on barangay experiences.

A representative from a women’s NGO will also provide inputs on CWDC Women’s Initiative and Its Impact to Women in Cagayan de Oro City.

At the end of the summit, participants are expected to present their outputs for the 2007-09 Direction Setting and Indicative Planning.

This year’s theme for the Women’s Month celebration is “CEDAW ng Bayan: Kabuhayan ng Kababaihan,” which emphasized the need to uphold women’s economic rights.

Meanwhile, the City Women Development Council lauded the commitment manifested by the city government along with the promotion of women’s rights when the city council approved on Monday City Ordinance 2007-100, the Women’s Development Code of Cagayan de Oro.

Rosales said the passage of the women’s code is a fitting gift to local women in line with the celebration of the Women’s Month this March.

The Women’s Development Code of Cagayan de Oro serves as the blueprint that will provide policy direction in formulating programs and strategies for women’s development.

The code provides, among others, specific policies on the protection of women against all forms of violence and abuse; comprehensive support to women survivors of violence; and promotion of women’s health, education, religion and political rights.
