Abused women increasing

ROXAS City: There is an increase in the number of cases of abuse against women. Report from the police provincial office of Capiz showed a total of 69 cases of abuse against women in 2006. Of these cases, 53, or 76.8 percent, were recorded in Roxas City.

Nenita Delfin, provincial women and children concerns services chief, said that in 2005 there were only 20 reported cases with the police, 14 cases filed in court and six others amicably settled.

She said that in 2005 most of the crimes committed against women was rape, and followed by violation of Republic Act 9262, the Antiviolence against Women and their Children (Anti-VAWC) Act of 2004.

Last year, however, 36, or more than 52 percent of the total crimes committed against women were violation of R.A. 9262.
