Can we ever right
our
election-system wrongs? |

Twenty-one years have passed
since the 1986 Constitution now in force inaugurated multiparty
electoral democracy in the Philippines. Once again, the May 14
midterm election—as did the 2004 presidential one—serves as a
barometer of our society’s democratic development.
In 1986, we Filipinos
dramatically showed the world through the People Power Revolt how
boldly and passionately we can be in restoring the democracy that
was taken away from us by a martial-law regime 14 years before. In
2007, the Filipinos reaffirmed their willingness to commit
themselves to democracy, as they did in the 2004 elections.
