Burying Marcos
|
|
THE body of Ferdinand Marcos, the
10th president of the Philippines, lies on top of a slab in a
mausoleum in Batac, Ilocos Norte. He belongs—according to the
loyalists, the Ilocanos and other Filipinos—to the Libingan ng mga
Bayani, the national cemetery for the nation’s heroes. But two
presidents have stood in the way, preferring that the man remained
in a refrigerated crypt.
Marcos died in Hawaii on Sept.
28, 1989, but on his return to the country, President Corazon Aquino
barred his internment at the Libingan—and for good reasons. Her
successor, President Fidel V. Ramos, reaffirmed her position. It
fell upon President Joseph Estrada to review their policy and to
suggest a proper burial in the national resting place. Estrada
invoked justice and national reconciliation but retreated when a
survey showed his idea was unpopular.
