PNP to field more policemen in the streets to safeguard cities

By Anthony Vargas, Reporter

MORE policemen will be deployed in the streets to deter criminal elements from victimizing people, the newly installed chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Monday.

Deputy Director General Avelino Razon Jr., acknowledged on his assumption speech that street crimes are among the perennial problems that the police needs to solve.

“We shall make our presence felt in as many areas as we can reach with as many police personnel as we can deploy. As such I will require the assignment of more police personnel in the field,” Razon said.

The PNP Chief said that the police in Metro Manila and other highly urbanized centers will spend more time in the field than inside offices or stations.

About 90 percent out of the 120,000-strong national police force will be unloaded for field assignments, while the rest will man the headquarters, Razon said.

“We shall see more PO1’s and inspectors out in the field. I will require station and precinct commanders to actually spend more time in the streets supervising the men on patrol,” Razon said.

The PNP chief added he would require the extensive use of the crime mapping system and more beat patrols to reduce the number of street crimes in Metro Manila and other urban centers.

“The NCRPO and other city police offices shall increase police visibility through a combination of fixed deployment of stations and mobile deployment of patrol vehicles,” Razon said.

The PNP chief added that non-uniformed personnel of the PNP will have the chance to handle key positions in the police force previously held by uniformed personnel.

He also called on the citizenry to help them in weeding out bad eggs in the police ranks by reporting to them the ‘scalawags’ and ‘rogue’ members of the PNP.

Yesterday, Razon formally took over the top PNP post during a turnover ceremony in Camp Crame from Director General Oscar Calderon who turned 56, the mandatory retirement age for police personnel.
