3 former rebels granted amnesty

GENERAL SANTOS CITY: Three former members of the New People’s Army in Sarangani and Agusan Del Sur have been granted amnesty along with monetary assistance from the government in Camp Panacan, Davao City.

Lt. Rosa Ma. Cristina Rosete-Manuel, the AFP division public affairs office deputy officer, said Major Gen. Ernesto D. Boac, commanding officer of the Army’s 10th Infantry Division handed the three former rebels some P68,000 for surrendered firearms in a simple ceremony during the flag raising ceremony in Camp Panacan.

The former rebels were identified as Edwin Macampao Y Caray alias Edmar, 20 years old, Tata Takas Y Bayang, 18 years old, both of Sitio Upper Kiogam, Upper Suyam, in Malapatan, Sarangani Province; and Raymund Lupe Subla, alias Alvin, 21 years old, and a resident of Barangay Mansanitas, Loreto, Agusan Del Sur.

Macampao was team leader of Alpha 1st Squad, 2nd Platoon of Front Committee 71, for South Mindanao. He surrendered his Cal. 14 Rifle to the 66th Infantry Battalion on August 4, 2006. Takas came from the same squad and he also surrendered his M16 rifle. Both received an P18,000.00 check each.

The two former communist guerillas surrendered to the Army’s 66th Infantry Battalion in the town of Malapatan under the command of Col. Fidel Legiralde.

The third, Subla, previously operated in Agusan del Sur as team leader of Team Primera Abe, Front Committee 34, also in Southern Mindanao. He surrendered to the Charlie Company of 60IB on September 17, at Barangay Bugdangan, Laak, Compostela Valley Province bringing along with him an M60 (General Purpose Machine Gun), one M16 rifle, one rocket-propelled grenade, one Claymore mine, 40mm grenade launcher ammunition, medical paraphernalia and subversive documents. He initially received a P30,000 check for the M60 GPMG he surrendered to the government.

Meanwhile, Boac said the 10th Infantry Division is still processing the papers of other former rebels but has assured the immediate release of funds intended for surrendered firearms.
