Nietes wins WBO title

DONNIE “AHAS” NIETES became the country’s fourth world champion after posting a 12-round decision over Thailand’s Pornsawam Kratingdaenggym in their World Boxing Organization minimum weight match Sunday night at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City.

Nietes won by unaninous scores of 116-110, 115-111 and 114-113.

The Thai was aggressive in the first two rounds but Nietes retaliated with solid body shots to knock down his opponent with a right hook in the fourth round.

Kratingdaenggym, ranked No. 2, regained his form in the succeeding rounds, coming up with a series of punches which Nietes tried to endure enroute to victory.

Other boxers who won world titles this year are Gerry Penalosa, Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire and Florante Condes.

Penalosa defeated Jhonny Gonzales via a seventh-round knockout to claim the WBO bantamweight champion, Donaire captured the International Boxing Organization/International Boxing Federation titles following a fifth-round KO over Vic Darchinyan while Condes pocketed the IBF mini-mumweight title over Muhammad Rachman of Indonesia by a unanimous
decision.
