Castro enters quarters

By Frank Calapre, Correspondent

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: RP team mainstay Godfrey Castro of the Philippine Army stamped his class over Michael Denilla of Iligan City at the start of the 2007 National Open Amateur boxing Championship at the Provincial Capitol ground Sunday night.

The 22-year-old Castro, a bronze medalist in the 2006 Doha Asian Games, connected a heavy right cross to the jaw of the inexperienced Denilla to win by RSC (Referee Stop Contest) with 1:29 remaining in the first round of their bantamweight bout.

“It was an easy match because my opponent has no experience. I think I can win the gold,” said Castro after advancing into the quarterfinals.

Castro said the absence of seasoned Joan Tipon boosted his gold medal bid. Tipon is in the US preparing for the World Championship scheduled later this month in Chicago.

“I think my other worthy opponent is Jay-Arr Quiam of the Elorde Boxing Team. I saw his fight and he’s also good,” added Castro.
