When celebrities lie

IF it’s true that Carlene is pregnant, the baby is not mine!” Without blinking, actor Dennis Trillo uttered this statement a few months ago when he was cornered by a small group of entertainment media practitioners on the rumor that his girlfriend Carlene Aguilar is pregnant with his baby.

When GMA 7 news reporter Lhar Santiago bumped into a very much pregnant Aguilar in a fashion retail store in the West Coast while he was on assignment, the former model-beauty queen denied that Trillo is the father of her baby and gave a hint that it is a Chinese businessman who is fathering her child.

Of course, no one believed them since most of their closest friends (except perhaps Trillo’s manager who never liked his girlfriend and any girl being linked to him for that matter) would attest that Trillo and Aguilar were very much in love and very much together before she flew to the United States.

In fact, the well-intentioned journalist-friends of Trillo we know were concerned and advised him to just tell the truth because sooner or later, it will come out eventually and Trillo will just be walking the hall of shame if he comes out and says another thing. A former adviser of Trillo told him straight to his face, “If you deny it now Dennis, then stand by it and deny it forever because people, specially your fans, will never believe you anymore.”

So when Aguilar finally gave birth to a baby boy on September 22 at a Los Angeles hospital and some people leaked the news that the baby’s registered surname is Ho (we all know how many Filipino medical workers are now employed all over the United States and the media can always get hold of these small but vital information), the issue that Trillo, whose real name is Abelardo Dennis Florencio Ho, once again surfaced.

Initially, he appeared to still be hesitant and even sent his manager to represent him in appearing on Startalk, a Saturday showbiz oriented-program of GMA. But the day after, on another GMA show, he finally mustered enough guts to admit that yes indeed, he lied.

With a voice that sounded more like that of a fallen angel, he said, “Yes, I’m the father of Carlene’s baby.” He also confirmed that he gave permission for the baby to carry his surname. “Tingin ko nararapat lang din naman na gamitin ’yung apelyido ko kasi baby ko naman ’yun e.”

What irked many viewers was Trillo’s defensive stance (acted out in a very subtle, convincing manner) regarding his previous denials and even used Aguilar as an alibi. “Nung bago pa umalis si Carlene, meron kaming kasunduan, nag-request siya sa akin na gusto niyang manahimik. As much as possible ayaw niyang mabanggit yung pangalan niya sa kahit anong interview kaya ’yun ’yung mga ginagawa ko kapag ini-interview ako bilang respect dahil nagpunta siya sa Amerika para manahimik, di ba?”

What respect was he talking about? We thought that was a spineless Trillo we saw on TV. If you now say that the baby is a blessing, and you believed that right from the start, then perhaps you should have been man enough to take the responsibility from the beginning. People know all along how much you and Carlene loved each other and the least you can do is face up to the consequences of siring a baby. But you didn’t and you denied and now, you’re washing your hands and telling us another thing?

Is Dennis Trillo being influenced, misguided and dictated upon by the people around him? If he allows that (and we reckon he has already allowed that to happen) then how can we expect him to be a responsible dad to his baby boy? How can he maintain his credibility both as an actor and as a person when he can brazenly lie and then recant his statement whenever he feels like it?

The problem with these celebrities, especially those who appear like meek sheep, is that they think they can always get away with everything. In a few weeks, people might not talk about this anymore after a new controversy takes over, but we never forget. A lie is a lie and we didn’t expect it to come from Dennis Trillo, the metal hero of the current GMA 7 fantasy series Zaido. True heroes don’t lie, baby.
