Comelec notes slow filing of certificates of candidacy

DUMAGUETE CITY: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Dumaguete has started receiving, although in trickles, certificates of candidacy (CoCs) for various positions in the coming Sangguniang Kabataan and Barangay elections.

Less than 30 people have so far filed CoCs for the position of barangay kagawad, village chief, sangguniang kabataan chairman and SK councilor in Dumaguete, with the start of the filing period on Saturday, September 29.

The city Comelec office, in the meantime, has announced it will not entertain submission of COCs on weekends as it cushioned prospective candidates to refrain from beating the deadline on October 18.

Inday Canares of the city Comelec office said candidates are required to present drug test results from duly-accredited testing centers, a residence certificate, two ID pictures and documentary stamps.

New faces are expected to surface in the barangay councils this year as 15 village chiefs in Dumaguete are no longer eligible for re-election, having completed their final terms.

Jose Quitay, chairman of Barangay Piapi here, however, denied reports that he is no longer qualified to run for re-election.

He said he is still allowed one term and promised developments in Piapi if given yet another mandate by the people.

On the other hand, the chairman of Barangay Bagacay, Vincent Perigua, is running for the position of barangay kagawad this year.

He said that he is doing this so he can finish the projects that he had started in his village over the past years while he was still chairman of Bagacay.
