CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: Athens Olympics veteran
Violeto Payla marched into the next round while Doha Asian Games
gold medalist Joan Tipon bowed out in the 2007 Smart-National Open
Youth and Women’s Amateur Boxing Championships before a huge crowd
at the Provincial Capitol ground Tuesday.
The 28-year-old Payla needed 106 minutes to stop
Welbert Apas of Calinan, Davao City via Referee Stop Contest (RSC-Injury)
in their 51-kg division fight.
Payla’s solid left uppercut and a right
straight hit Apas’ nose which bled profusely forcing ring
physician to end the bout.
“I hit him hard because I don’t want to be
overconfident. This is boxing and I should not take any chances,”
said Payla, who saw action in the World Championship in England
(2002) and Thailand (2003).
Tipon, one of the four gold medalists in Doha,
came prepared but fell to the more aggressive Orlando Tacuyan of
Angeles City, 24-26.
It was Tacayan’s first win over Tipon, one of
four gold medalists in Doha.
“I’m happy to beat him finally,” said the
19-year-old Tacuyan, who lost to Tipon twice in the ABAP Go-for-Gold
tournament early this year.
“We’ve met before so I know his weak
points,” added Tacuyan, a college freshman taking up Hotel and
Restaurant Management at the University of Baguio. He’s a member
of the national training pool for the past four years.
Tipon will banner the 7-man RP squad seeing
action in the World Boxing Championship in Chicago later this month.
