LETTER

Let’s call the Philippines “Maharlika”

We wish to compliment you for your witty and informative editorials every Sunday. Last Sunday, October 7, was no exception, even more hilarious.

Very few people know about, or appreciate, changes of names of places all over the world. This writer not excluded. As a matter of fact, Sen. Eddie Ilarde filed a bill changing Philippines to Maharlika. We were surprised, to say the least, why our idol filed such a bill. But after being informed that the Philippines was named after a demented and iniquitous person, and many other countries reverting back to their true identity, I had a change of heart. Your editorial even made us appreciate former Sen. Ilarde more for espousing unpopular (at first) causes.

I wonder if we shall be finally called Maharlika in this lifetime. Courage to change perhaps is what this country needs to gain respect from other peoples. We are not just a country of laborers and maids but “nobly created” as your editorial said and worthy of the words “noble and royal.”
