UNSEEDED Filipino pair Sally Mae Siso and
Martina Guba pulled off a 6-1, 6-3 upset win over second seeds
Hillary de Guzman and Theiviya Selvarajoo of Malaysia Friday to
capture the girls’ doubles title in the Agra Cup/Asian Tennis
Federation 14-Under Series at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
It was a stunning victory for the dynamic local
tandem who ousted top seeds Adelle Chia Boey and Shannine Olivarez,
6-4,6-3, and third seeds Macy Gonzales and Patricia Orteza, 6-1,6-0,
on the way to the finals.
“It was team effort. We played well together
and we were able to overcome the pressure of playing against seeded
players,” chorused Siso and Guba.
Earlier, Siso and Guba eliminated their
respective seeded rivals to arrange a title showdown in the girls’
singles.
The 13-year-old Siso, a high-school freshman at
the University of San Carlos in Cebu, ousted second-seeded
Selvarajoo, 6-2, 6-3, while Guba scored a 6-0, 6-3 reversal over
third-seeded Olivarez.
The finals is set at 10 a.m. Saturday.
In the boys division, local bet Leander Lazaro
marched into the boys’ singles finals after posting a 6-3, 6-3
victory over Tim Polero.
Lazaro will shoot for the title against top seed
Ariez Elyaa Dean Hasham of Malaysia, who rallied past Cebuano
Bernardine Siso, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
Siso and John Arnel Go, on the other hand, made
it to the doubles semifinals after beating compatriots Kyle Cordero
and Leander Lazaro, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3.
