New controversy hounds Garci

The former Comelec commissioner says his name has been dragged into the alleged smuggling try

By Anthony Bayarong, Correspondent

SUBIC BAY Freeport: It seems like wherever he goes controversy follows, this time former Comelec commissioner Virgilio Garcillano has been linked with a smuggling attempt after police authorities flagged down a 1999 Porsche Boxter said to have been smuggled out of Subic Bay Freeport a week ago.

But the controversial Comelec commissioner on Monday denied owning the said 1999 Porsche Boxter that was confiscated by the Olongapo Police on Friday morning at Barangay Cabalan.

“I don’t know anything about that Porsche, I’m not engaged in illegal activities and I have no connections here,” Garciliano told the Manila Times.

His name was allegedly dragged in the smuggling try when the driver of the said Porsche which was later identified as a certain 19-year-old Karlo Gineta told police that the vehicle belonged to Garcillano.

Documents show that the black Boxter convertible sports car (model 1999), with plate number XHA-798, was imported from the United States by Global (Subic) International Inc., a registered enterprise inside the Freeport.

Documents obtained by the Manila Times revealed that it was not only one vehicle but three which includes a Hummer, a Porsche Carrera and the said Porsche Boxter.

Police authorities tried to flag down the Hummer and the Porsche Carrera but the two sped off.

Louie Moloa, Global (Subic) International official confirmed that they imported the vehicles and that the Porsche left their yard that evening to be transferred to another yard.

“He [Garciliano] is not the owner of the vehicle, my company was the one who imported the vehicle,” Moloa said.

“It was supposed to be transferred to another yard, I do not know how it got out of the Freeport,” Moloa explained. He, however, refused to identify where the car was supposed to have been transferred and later told reporters that it was already sold but he again refused to identify the buyer.

“But I am here to clear the name of commissioner Garcilliano. That’s all,” Moloa said.

Garciliano however admitted to knowing Subic Customs Collector Marietta Zamoranos but explained that she is not his relative. “My father and her father are good friends, that is why I know her,” he added.

“We were having a party here in my office when I heard about that issue, I’m just establishing myself here and putting up a law office in Subic,” Garciliano said.

He added that he does not even like vehicles bought inside the freeport since “Maraming Kuskos Balungos, nabili mo na nga yung sasakyan kailangan pa tuwing lalabas eh magpapakita ka pa ng pass at kung anu-ano pa, kaya nga sa San Fernando na lang ako bumili ng sasakyan,” he explained.
