Multi-awarded hospital Makati Medical Center chalked up another big
win at the recently concluded Hospital Management Asia Awards 2007.
From among the 282 projects presented by 75 hospitals in 17
countries vying for the prestigious honor, Makati Med’s project,
“Lending A Helping Hand,” was declared the most outstanding in
the Community Service Project category.
Makati Med had been a previous winner in the
international awards program, which recognizes hospitals that
implement outstanding new projects, successful healthcare
strategies, quality standards, and proven patient-care techniques.
This year’s Hospital Management Asia winners received their
respective awards during the Gala Dinner Ceremonies in Pattaya,
Thailand.
The country’s premier hospital launched
Lending A Helping Hand to aid the unfortunate communities in Albay,
Bicol who were badly hit by super-typhoon Reming in 2006. Makati
Med’s Department of Medicine worked closely with the Office of the
Medical Director, Medical Staff Association, and the rest of Makati
Med’s departments to pool together their resources and skills for
the project.
A team of volunteers comprised of doctors,
nurses, as well as representatives from the hospital’s
pharmaceutical partners went to the ravaged areas to provide
supplies and medical assistance. Psychiatrists were also on hand to
help survivors who might suffer from post-traumatic stress
disorders.
An adjunct livelihood project has also been
established. Through the Swine Dispersal Program families were given
three female piglets to start their own hog farms. The scheme
requires beneficiaries to raise two of the pigs for eventual sale,
while retaining one for breeding to address both the short-term need
for earning and long-term issue of sustaining their livelihood.
To date, Lending A Helping Hand has provided
food, clothing, cash and medicines to approximately 2,000 families.
