Peso appreciation hurts business planning

THE peso’s rapid appreciation is making it difficult for companies to plan for next year. At last week’s annual conference of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), the opening-day plenary speaker, Manuel V. Pangilinan of PLDT, took the cudgels for exporters and other corporations that have been hurt by the dollar’s precipitous decline.

The timing is impeccable as companies usually undertake their annual planning sessions during the final three months of the year. By this time, they should have a clearer picture of how the key macroeconomic indicators would perform in the coming year.
