THE military maintains there is
no specific threat in Metro Manila on account of the government’s
current offensive against Muslim extremists in the South and the
communist rebels, the detention of Communist Party of the
Philippines founding chairman Jose Maria Sison in the Netherlands,
and the much awaited Sandiganbayan verdict on the deposed
President Estrada’s plunder case.
This was asserted by newly
installed Marine Commandant Benjamin Dolorfino at a breakfast forum
in Quezon City. He, however, said they are not letting their guards
down since Metro Manila has been placed on red alert.
“We have been receiving reports
and these are being verified by the intelligence community, but
right now there is no specific threat in regarding a specific group
that are conducting destabilization efforts,” Dolorfino said
during Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.-sponsored Kapihan ng
Bayan.
He said the military is also
closely monitoring activities that could be used by some groups
involved in destabilization plots to threaten the seat of the
government.
As for the possible recruitment
within the military to join efforts to over throw the present
government, Dolorfino said that there is no concrete evidence that
will verify any attempt and that the military can immediately trace
and counter such move.
“I have instructed my men that
if ever they are being recruited by individuals to join the
destabilization plot, they only need two more witnesses, and we can
arrest and detain the said individual(s),” he explained.
