IT seems that a year’s head start was not enough
for the Xbox360 to dominate this generation’s console wars.
According to a recent report from the Financial Times, the Nintendo
WII has overtaken the X360 in international sales, while making the
PS3 eat some dust as it remains on the third spot. The report cited
cumulative sales data through the end of July, which showed that the
Nintendo WII has now sold more units worldwide than the Xbox 360.
According to the FT,
approximately 9 million WIIs were purchased all over the globe as of
July 31, overtaking the 8.9 million units of 360s sold. The PS3
lagged far behind with an estimated 3.7 million units
internationally.
Those numbers reflect the total
number of units sold and not those that were shipped as console
makers usually tout the number of consoles they have shipped into
the retail channels. Microsoft for example announced it had shipped
11.5 million 360s, short of its self-imposed 12-million unit goal
while Sony said it produced 5.5 million PS3s worldwide.
If confirmed, the WII sales marks
a milestone is a watershed for Nintendo as it would be the first
time Nintendo can lay claim to be the best-selling console since it
dominated the market during the Super Nintendo Entertainment System
era.
