Police arrest notorious gang
leader in Central Mindanao

GENERAL SANTOS CITY: Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) operatives arrested early dawn Monday, Central Mindanao’s second most notorious robbery gang leader in Barangay Kauran, Ampatuan town, Maguindanao province.

The suspect, Jimmy Porras, 48, the alleged second man of the “Gumban robbery group,” was arrested by virtue of a warrant of arrest issued by Judge Oscar Dinopol of the South Cotabato Regional Trial Court due to three counts of robbery with violence against persons and murder.

The arrest came a few days after the group’s leader, Jarid Gumban alias Gary was arrested in a joint operation conducted by elements of the CIDG and the Cavite Police Force in Bacoor, Cavite.

Senior Supt. Generoso Bonifacio, CIDG director for Central Mindanao, said next to Gumban who has a P350,000 reward on his head due to nine cases of robbery in hand, is Poras, who also has a P300,000 bounty on his head. Both suspects were considered South Cotabato’s most wanted criminals.

“Gumban was sentenced by Judge Eddie Rojas of the Regional Trial Court Branch 39 of 11th Judicial Region for imprisonment of 8 to 10 years after he was found guilty of the robbery charges filed against him but he has been so elusive in the past years,” Bonifacio said.

Earlier, in an exclusive coverage by The Manila Times, CIDG agents led by Supt. Hendry Dazo stormed the residence of prominent businessman Pedro Amadeo in Pulatana, Barangay Malandag, Sarangani Province after receiving information that the suspect has sought the refuge of the said businessman.

“Our informants have also confirmed that the suspect is the elder brother of Jomarie Poras, live-in partner of Amadeo’s daughter, An-an and stand-in manager/caretaker of the Amadeo mango plantation,” Dazo said.

During the first raid that was conducted at around 10 p.m., authorities failed to apprehend the suspect but instead seized two caliber .45 pistols from Jomarie and an army sergeant in the house.

During investigation, police recovered the suspect’s cellular phone number, latest text messages and time of calls in one of the confiscated cellular phones.

At early dawn of the following day, CIDG operatives traveled more or less 200 kilometers from Sarangani to Maguindanao Province where the suspect has been caught, flatfooted.
