Not your usual dating spots

By Cathy Romualdez

Dating can get quite dull in the metro if you are limited to the usual dinner and blockbuster movie. Here are a few suggestions to spice up your dates. They are guaranteed not only to leave lasting memories but to ensure a follow-up date as well.

Walking tours
by Carlos Celdran

For those who wish to learn more about Philippine culture and history (which I believe should be every Filipino!), try an afternoon date exploring the historic districts of Intramuros, Chinatown or Quiapo. There is never a dull moment, as Carlos Celdran entertainingly guides you through these sites with a rich discussion of our historical past.

Go-karting

For the couple that wishes to get their adrenaline pumping (outside the bedroom that is!), try Go-kart racing. You will definitely feel the thrill and excitement as you race your partner on the tracks. Steer the wheel and accelerate on the gas at Speedzone at Fort Bonifacio, or at the newly opened City Kart Racing, an indoor track located at West Service Road, Sucat, Parañaque. Both are open until late in the evening.

Quiz night at Murphy’s

Intelligence may be one of your most desirable traits. However, bragging about it can be a real turn-off. Discretely show off your high IQ (or discretely test your date’s!) by trying out Quiz Night at Murphy’s Bar, Makati. The Irish pub organizes the event every Tuesday at 8 p.m. To play, you will need to form a minimum of four members. Categories range anywhere from general knowledge to literature. It makes for a terrific group date, because double dating can also mean double the fun.

Foreign and independent films

For the film buff couple that wants an alternative to watching the current blockbusters, try checking out a foreign or independent film. Every so often, organizations such as Goethe-Institut Manila, Instituto Cervantes and Dante Alighieri Manila feature films from their country of origin. You may also want to check out Filipino and other Asian films by Cinekatipunan at Magnet Café, Katipunan. Film schedules are listed on each organization’s website.

Salsa lessons
By Salsa Filipinas

A personal favorite and a definite must! Think: Dirty Dancing Havana Nights. There is nothing more enjoyable than learning how to dance the super sexy salsa with a partner. You don’t need to have the moves of Patrick Swayze. When hitting the dance floor, all you need is confidence and maybe a little alcohol. Salsa Filipinas offers salsa lessons at Magnet Café, Bonifacio High Street every Thursday night at 8 p.m.
