THE Sandiganbayan Second Division has deferred anew its promulgation
of the perjury case field against retired Maj. Gen. Carlos Garcia.
According to Sandiganbayan Justice Edilberto
Sandoval, more time is needed to study the details of Garcia’s
case involving his 1998 Statement of Assets and Liabilities and
Networth.
March 12 was the original date of the promulgation,
which was later moved to April 1. Now the court decided to
reschedule it to April 10.
The chairman of the court’s Second Division
stressed that it is still “deliberating on some final points
involved in the case” which they are hoping to resolve by April
10.
In the meantime, Garcia’s counsel,
Constantino de Jesus, said they are expecting an acquittal of their
client since they presented sufficient evidence to prove their case
is similar to the dismissed perjury case in 2006, which was filed
before the Sandiganbayan Third Division.
Garcia was charged with four counts of perjury,
and cases of plunder and amassing ill-gotten wealth. The last cases
also named his wife and three sons as defendants.
He was charged after the Ombudsman received
information from the US Department of Homeland Security that US
officials seized $100,000 from his sons. Records also showed
that the general’s wife, Clarita, transported
into
the US over $500,000 since 1993.
