RP’s best coffee found in
Sultan Kudarat—traders

DAVAO CITY: Coffee industry players in Sultan Kudarat province are very proud of their coffee products saying “it is the best coffee in the country,” reported the Philippine News Agency.

Department of Trade and Industry Sultan Kudarat provincial caretaker Carlito Nuñez said it was the Department of Agriculture that declared the province as having the best Arabica coffee beans in the country.

He said the local government in coordination with the private sector is currently working on making its coffee, branded as “Sultan Kudarat Coffee,” the OTOP (one town one product) of the province.

Nuñez said over 30 percent of the total coffee production in the country comes from Sultan Kudarat.

The province is located in SOCSKSARGEN region in Mindanao. The region consists of the provinces of Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, South Cotabato, and Sarangani and General Santos City, with Cotabato City as the regional center.

Sultan Kudarat has over 2,000 hectares planted to coffee particularly in the municipality of Senator Ninoy Aquino, Nuñez said.

Although it has yet to capture the world market, ongoing research aims to identify which area in the world market “Sultan Kudarat Coffee” would be best suited to, Nuñez said, adding that the municipal government crafted a 10-year development plan for coffee in Sultan Kudarat two years ago.
