SAN PABLO, Laguna: Students from Laguna College recently topped the
First National Biotech Quiz for High School held at the Bureau of
Soils and Water Management.
The team from Region IV – Calabarzon composed
of John Rafael Alicando, Zarina Alimagno, and Princess Rozin Yambao
and their coach, Ms. Glenda Tabo went home with the P30,000 cash
prize and a trophy.
Coming in second is the team from Bicol
Region’s Saint Joseph’s School composed of Jan Garrick Hatol,
Stephanie del Castillo and Sarah Jaye Oliva, under the guidance of
Mr. Leo Barrameda, their coach. The team went home with P20,000 in
cash and a trophy.
Placing third is the team from the NCR’s
Philippine Women’s University – JASMS represented by Patrick So,
Jotham Rodriguez and Rafael Lanting, with their coach Evelyn Mariñas.
The team went home with P10,000 in cash and a trophy.
The Laguna College team passed the series of
tests joined by 248 others from 150 high schools in Calabarzon,
Bicol, National Capital Region, Visayas, Northern Luzon, and
Mindanao. The regional contests were supported by the International
Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications.
A project of the Biotechnology Coalition of the
Philippines, the Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc., the
National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology in UP
Diliman and the UP Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Society, the
contest was envisioned to stimulate the interest of Filipino high
school students in biotechnology. The project also aims to
contribute to the promotion of awareness in this field of science
among young students nationwide.
