Domestic trade down nearly
a fifth in second quarter

THE country’s total value of domestic trade in the second quarter of last year went down by nearly a fifth, the National Statistics Office said.

The NSO said the total value of domestic trade dropped by 17.2 percent to P55.99 billion in the second quarter last year from the P79.68 billion in the same period in 2006.

“The commodities were traded mostly through water, comprising 99.6 percent in the second quarter of 2006 and 99.9 percent in the second quarters of 2007,” the NSO said.

The NSO said the bulk of the value of commodities that flowed throughout the country during the period came from food and live animals amounting to P20.29 billion. This was followed by machinery and transport equipment with P10.75 billion; manufactured goods classified chiefly by material, P10.06 billion; animal and vegetable oils, fats and waxes with P624.79 million.

The National Capital Region accounted for 36.8 percent or P24.29 billion of the total value of domestic trade, the largest share among the regions. Northern Mindanao followed with transactions amounting to P9.10 billion; Central Luzon, P9.07 billion; Western Visayas, P4.95 billion; Eastern Visayas, P4.63 billion; and Cagayan Valley, P14,000.
