WHEN Baby Cruz, owner of Frank Provost Salon in Jupiter Street,
opened a training center a few years ago, she never imagined that it
could develop into something beyond beautiful.
The Center for Aesthetic Studies (CAS) realizes
the need for a Values Formation class within the school’s diploma
program in cosmetology.
Because the curriculum is a balance of theory
and practice, the students get to experience a hands-on-approach to
what is taught that is backed up by research and theory. The school
espouses a 60/40 practice to theory ratio. Balance on a daily basis
is discussed in how to use the hair to create a silhouette to
accentuate the face; or for make-up, how a student needs to contour
the face to create a more balanced shape.
A student, Meca Penson-Prieto says, “The class
with Mrs. Cruz has helped me validate that being beautiful does not
always mean vanity. When done in moderation, it simply means loving
oneself.”
Another student, Mercy Chiu says, “the class
has given me the peace to accept things that I can and cannot do,
because there’s a bigger purpose in life, whether or not, it is
explained to me now, later or never.”
“I have learned that trials in life and how we
accept or react to them is simply a person’s way of showing their
love for God,” says Hazel Icasiano, still training in the school.
To this, Cruz would give her humble
comment—“I am inspired by the student’s reaction and
acceptance of the class. I hope they too realize the importance of
sharing themselves to others with the virtues they have learned.”
