THERE are four reasons for Gerry Peñalosa to win over Ratanachai
Sor Vorapin of Thailand namely Daniel Ponce De Leon, Israel Vasquez,
Rafael Marquez and Jorge Arce.
De Leon, the WBO super bantamweight champion,
Vasquez, the 122-lb champion, Marquez, a former two-division champ,
and Arce, a Mexican boxing superstar, are potential mega-buck
opponents for Peñalosa in the near future.
But Peñalosa knows better than looking beyond
his opponent on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
“Hindi ako pwedeng magkumpiyansa dahil
magaling din ang makakalaban ko,” said Peñalosa, who will make
his first defense of the World Boxing Organization bantamweight
belt. “I have a Plan A, Plan B and Plan C for this fight.”
Peñalosa has a record of 52-6-2 (win-loss-draw)
with 35 knockouts entering the fight. He won the title by stopping
Jhonny Gonzales of Mexico in the seventh round with a single shot to
the body last August at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California.
Vorapin, 31, is a veteran of 81 fights, winning
72 of them with 48 knockouts.
“Alam ko na gusto niya makaganti sa akin. Ako
naman, gusto ko na maiganti ang mga kababayan natin na tinalo n’ya,”
said the 35-year-old champ, referring to the 12 Filipino fighters
beaten by Vorapin after losing to him.
The fight will be the main attraction of the
momentous card dubbed as “Invasion: Philippines vs. The World.”
