‘GTK Army’ goes to Thailand

 
FOURTEEN members of the national squad vie for honors in the 2008 Thailand Open Track and Field Championship on April 24 to 30 at the Thammasat University Sports Complex in Bangkok.

Southeast Asian Games champion and hammer throw record holder Arniel Ferrera banners the famous “GTK Army” along with fellow gold medallists Rene Herrera who will see action in his pet events 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000-meter run, and Julius Nierras in 400m run and 4x400m relay.

The RP tracksters went home with five gold, six silver and nine bronze medals in the 2007 Thailand Games, far from their nine-gold medal haul in the 2005 edition in Manila.

Also competing in their respective events are Mercedita Manipol (5,000m and 10,000m), Rosie Villarito (javelin throw), Danilo Fresnido (javelin throw), Ernie Candelario (400m and 4x400m relay), Arnold Villarube (decathlon), Joebert Delicano (triple jump), Midel Dique (800m and 1,500m), Julius Sermona (5,000m and 10,000m), Rodrigo Tanuan (4x400m relay and 400m run), Elizier Sunang (shotput) and Junrey Bano (4x400m relay and 400m run).

Joining them are coaches Romeo Gido (men’s) and former long jump queen Lerma Bulauitan-Gabito (women’s).

Invited countries in the annual event are Vietnam, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Korea, China, Japan, Indonesia, Brunei, Myanmar and Cambodia.
