PUERTO PRINCESA CITY: The organizing committee has invited World
Boxing Council super featherweight champion Manny Pacquiao for the
opening ceremonies of the 2008 Palarong Pambansa on April 20 at the
newly-refurbished Ramon V. Mitra Sports Complex here.
Mayor Edward Hagedorn said Pacquiao would be
bestowed with the title of “Ambassador of Sports” by the city
government during the occasion.
“He is truly a national treasure. His presence
in the opening ceremonies will inspire our young and promising
athletes to do better in the competition,” said Hagedorn.
Pacquiao, the only Asian to win three world
titles in different divisions, will be gracing the opening rites
alongside President Gloria Arroyo.
The council has unanimously approved the city
resolution naming Pacquiao as Puerto Princesa City’s “Ambassador
for Sports.”
Meanwhile, the refurbishing of the 11 venues and
the construction of nine new facilities were already finished.
All the venues and facilities will be tested as
Puerto Princesa plays host to the MIMAROPA (Mindoro-Marinduque-Romblon-Palawan)
regional meet starting on Sunday.
The host city spent around P60 million to meet
the infrastructure requirements and renovations of the billeting
centers.
