ECOP confab tackles realities in workplace

Faced with the immense challenges of a highly connected, borderless and knowledge-based environment vis-à-vis the need to continuously foster an atmosphere of social dialogue that promotes decent work, employers have resolved to pursue greater interaction among stakeholders.

The Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) will make use of the upcoming 29th National Conference of Employers slated on 14-15 May 2008 at the Manila Hotel to spearhead discussions with lawmakers, government executives, private sector, and labor leaders in relation to the changing workplace as well as the changing roles the stakeholders have to play.

ECOP President Sergio Ortiz-Luis, Jr. noted that Conference focusing on the theme, “The Empowered Workplace,” will showcase the realities in the changing workplace and “address basic issues affecting the stakeholders in a new light.”

According to Ortiz-Luis, the Conference will not only pave the way for greater interaction among stakeholders but also gut-level discussion on current and emerging issues, and promotion of doable initiatives for policy reform.

David O. Chua, president and CEO, Cathay Pacific Steel Corp. and chairman of this year’s Conference Organizing Committee, pointed out that with the radical change in today’s workplace, “not only have the rules in the game of business changed—the game itself has changed.”

“The new ways of doing business necessitate new mindsets among the players, and engender a more flexible environment that spawns new, innovative ideas in relating with the stakeholders,” Chua emphasized.

Among the issues to be tackled in the Conference are “Expanding the Coverage of Social Protection; Defining the Legislative Labor Agenda; Nurturing Entrepreneurship; Creating Jobs; and The Changing Face of the Workplace.”
