Teachers Camp renamed Center for Arts
and Culture for Northern Luzon

TEACHERS CAMP, Baguio City: On May 10, the camp will not only be known as Teachers Camp but it will also be known as the Center for Arts and Culture for Northern Luzon, said Education Assistant Secretary Jonathan Malaya on Sunday during the soft launching of the centennial anniversary. He also said that the Department of Education has some major redevelopments lined up for the Camp.

Among these redevelopment objectives is the creation of a well-managed and well-equipped training and conference venue to enhance the training of public and private school teachers. Likewise, the education department aims to provide optimal facilities to address the training needs of educators in support of the Basic Education Sector Reform Agenda. The heritage structures of the camp that form part of the country’s patrimony will be restored and conserved to maximize the area’s tourism potential so that it becomes self-sustaining as well as income-generating for DepEd.

Teachers Camp has been DepEd’s premier training and convention facility for the past 100 years, and is home to the National Educators Academy of the Philippines. It also services the training and recreation needs of public and private school teachers, students, government employees, and the general public.

It has recently been declared a National Heritage Site because of the DepEd’s conservation and restoration efforts.

According to Malaya, the essential features of the master development plan include: rationalizing the road and parking system for better traffic flow and increased security; rationalizing land use to delineate the educational, recreational, sports and park areas; Plan for future expansion to increase capacity, maximize facilities and increase revenue and establish a “pedestrian friendly” community.

The Baguio Teachers Camp museum will be inaugurated on May 10, as the camp is formally declared the Center for Culture and Arts in Northern Luzon.

Within the year, Malaya said that the camp would host the National Debate Championship, the awarding of National Model Student and Teacher of the Year; the reunion of retired DepEd key officials and regional directors; and the educators’ congress.
