TWELVE teams, including two former men’s and women’s champions,
begin their quest for Boracay slots in the 2008 Nestea Beach Volley
National Circuit Visayas elims which starts on Tuesday at the
University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City.
Competing are Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion,
Foundation University, Iloilo Doctors College, Southwestern
University, University of Iloilo, University of
Negros-Occidental-Recoletos, University of St. La Salle-Bacolod,
University of San Agustin, University of San Carlos, University of
San Jose-Recoletos, University of Southern Philippines Foundation
and women’s defending champion University of the Visayas.
Foundation won the men’s title in 2001 while
San Jose-Recoletos won in 2002 and 2004. Southwestern is the most
successful team in the event’s 12-year history after winning the
women’s title in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
The top three teams in the men’s and women’s
divisions will advance to the national finals slated April 24 to 26
on Boracay Island.
Already qualified were Capitol University,
University of Mindanao-Tagum and Holy Cross of Davao College
(men’s), and University of Mindanao-Tagum, Holy Cross of Davao
College and University of Mindanao-Davao (women’s) from Mindanao.
The Luzon qualifiers were Far Eastern
University, Philippine Christian University and University of
Perpetual Help-Dalta (men’s) and Adamson University, Far Eastern
University and Lyceum of the Philippines (women’s).
Cash prizes at stake in the national finals are
P150,000 (first), P75,000 (second) and P40,000 (third). Tournament
sponsors are Havaianas, Speedo, Mikasa, Penshoppe, Tagum Beach
Volley Drome at Rotary Park, University of St. La Salle Bacolod,
Island Cove Hotel and Leisure Park, Crystal Sand Beach Resort, Le
Soleil de Boracay Hotel, La Carmela de Boracay Resort Hotel,
D’Mall, D’Boracay and Hey! Jude Resort.
