BACOLOD CITY: Defending women’s champion University of the Visayas
and three-time champion Southwestern University proved too much
against their respective rivals at the start of the 2008 Nestea
Beach Volley National Circuits Visayas elimination on Tuesday at the
University of St. La Salle sand court.
Veterans Janez Armie Igot and Jusabelle Brillo
of UV wasted no time in crushing Jenny Torres and Julie Ann Billote
of University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, 21-11, 21-14, to start
their title retention bid on a high note.
“We’ve been playing for three years which
will be our advantage against the other teams. But we don’t want
to be complacent. One game at a time kami, kailangan muna naming mag-qualify
bago namin isipin ‘yung finals” said Igot, a junior Hotel and
Restaurant Management student.
On the other hand, last year’s runner up SWU
represented by Janelle Tabio and comebacking Florian Gutierrez also
made a rousing debut as they clobbered University of Iloilo’s
Richell Arroz and Karen Mae Aranda, 21-11, 21-8.
“Our experience is a big factor but we need to
be consistent at all because most of the teams right now really
improved a lot,” stressed Gutierrez, who is the other half of the
champion team in the 2003, 2004 and 2005 editions.
In the other games, Foundation University
blasted Iloilo Doctors College, 21-13, 21-11; and University of
Southern Philippines Foundation upended university of San Agustin,
21-19, 21-14.
In men’s division, former titlist University
of San Jose-Recoletos took an early lead after scoring two straight
wins in this event supported by Havaianas, Speedo, Mikasa, Penshoppe,
Tagum Beach Volley Drome at Rotary Park, University of St. La Salle
Bacolod, Island Cove Hotel and Leisure Park, Crystal Sand Beach
Resort, Le Soleil de Boracay Hotel, La Carmela de Boracay Resort
Hotel, D’Mall, D’Boracay and Hey! Jude Resort.
USJ-R’s Ariel Carumba and Loujei Tipgos
defeated Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod duo Jeffrey Getida and Armando
Diwatin Jr., 21-13, 21-10, then rallied past University of St La
Salle-Bacolod tandem Emmanuel Marlon Luces and Mark Sabusap, 16-21,
21-16, 15-8.
