METROPOLITAN Manila Development Authority (MMDA)
Chairman Bayani Fernando on Wednesday denied that the MMDA
tarpaulins bearing his image are pushing his political ambitions in
2010.
This was Fernando’s reaction
after militant group Kadamay spray-painted his life-sized tarpaulins
along EDSA on Wednesday dawn as a protest against what they claimed
as early campaigning by the MMDA chairman.
Authorities arrested three
persons who were caught in the act of vandalizing the posters in
Mandaluyong City Wednesday dawn. Initial reports showed that the
three scribbled “KDMY Berdugo [Executioner]” on Fernando’s
image on the poster with a text that read “Kaayusan, Pagbabago sa
Kapaligiran, Pagbabago sa Kaisipan.”
“The purpose of the posters is
to remind people to follow traffic rules and regulations and
maintain their discipline on the road,” Fernando said in a
phone-patched interview with a Manila-based radio station. He is now
in Brazil on a study tour sponsored by the World Bank.
Kadamay spokesman John Vincent
Marin said the spray-painting is their way of protesting
Fernando’s early politicking.
At past 4 a.m., another group of
militant youths belonging to the same organization continued
spray-painting Fernando’s posters along GMA-Kamuning.
“They [militant groups] could
put up their own posters if they have a much better message than the
one carried by the MMDA tarpaulins,” the MMDA chief said.
