The Ifugao rice terraces

LONG before farmers in Central and Southern Luzon were learning how to plant rice, the Ifugaos were already masters of the craft, carving paddies out of mountainsides and feeding the people of the North not with root crops but with delicious varieties of the national staple.

The achievements of the Ifugao farmers rise in bold relief as the country prepares for a rice crisis that begins with spiraling costs and possibly a shortage. Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap and President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo have calmed our fears by guaranteeing ample supply in the coming months, but the worrisome price tags in rice stores and public markets reflect a real problem that could get worse months from today.
