DESPITE being dragged as a respondent in the 11-year case involving
Luisito Espinosa’s unpaid prize purse in his 1997 title fight with
Argentine Carlos Rios, long-time boxing promoter Rod Nazario said
he’s planning to raise enough money to help the former two-time
world champion start a new life.
Nazario refused to divulge details of his
fund-raising program for the 40-year-old Espinosa, but said he’s
going out of his way to help the Filipino boxing hero get the
justice long overdue him.
“Ako na mismo ang gagawa ng paraan. May
planong tulong ako sa kanya, dahil naaawa ako kay Louie. Pero ayaw
ko munang sabihin, baka ma-preempt. Hopefully, mag-prosper ito,”
said Nazario on Friday in the SCOOP sa Kamayan forum.
Incidentally, Nazario along with partner Lito
Mondejar and former South Cotabato Gov. Hilario de Pedro were among
the persons charged in court for the nonpayment of the $150,000
prize money due to Espinosa for his sixth-round technical-knockout
win over Rios in Koronadal, South Cotabato that allowed him to
retain his World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight title.
Coming back home after being away for a decade,
Espinosa, with the assistance of the Games and Amusements Board
(GAB) led by chairman Eric Buhain, is reviving the case sitting on
the sala of judge Rosario Cruz of Branch 173 of the Manila Regional
Trial Court.
