THE exhibition “Beautiful Sins” explores the seductive nature of
sin. Opening on April 23, 2008 at the Art Asia Gallery in Megamall,
it will feature 13 artists—painters Froilan Calayag, Melvin Culaba,
Anna De Leon, Jon Jaylo, Janice Liuson-Young, Jason Montinola, Ivan
Roxas, CJ Tañedo, and sculptors SEB, MX, Kylo Chua, Noy Gepte and
Jun Vicaldo and is Curated by Benjie Cabangis.
According to Jaylo, the artists initially found
the idea of expressing sin as something beautiful yet making it
clear that it is wrong very challenging. But when they explored the
matter further, they realized that examples of such transgression
were not that difficult to find.
Jaylo’s own work, “War of Hearts and
Minds”, depicts the seemingly chaotic concept of choosing between
using one’s heart or mind. Vanity is the focus of Janice Liuson-Young’s
work. Entitled “Mirror, Mirror”, it features a woman obsessed
with her appearance.
“A Cute Way to Express Gluttony” by
Froilan Calayag deals with the insatiable appetite not just for food
which is what the sin is often associated with.
Anna de Leon explains her work “Forbidden:”
“It focuses on the apple which symbolizes the consummated act of
temptation. A silhouette of a naked man with his back turned seems
to be amused by the light and what the moment brings, a beautiful
passionate but forbidden moment.”
“Inquisition Symphony no. 3” by CJ Tañedo
warns against people who pass themselves off as something that they
are not.
Jason Montinola’s “Ooops I did it again!!”
zeroes in on repetitive sin, stressing that forgiveness comes only
when one does not willingly and deliberately repeat the same
mistake.
All paintings featured in “Beautiful Sins”
are oil on a 4ft. x 4ft. canvas.
The exhibit will be opened on April 23 by guest
of honor Araceli Limcaco Dans. Performance artist Danny Sillada will
render a number.
“Beautiful Sins” will run until May 18. Art
Asia Gallery is located at the 4th floor, Building A, Megamall,
Mandaluyong City.
