Yoshinoya’s search for the gyudon lover with the biggest appetite
and the fastest speed ended recently with registered nurse Rafael
Antonio Suing and employee Armando Ngo, respectively, winning the
titles in the Second Yoshinoya Gyudon Eating Contest grand finals.
Competing against 50 other big eaters vying for
the most number of gyudon beef bowls in 20 minutes crown,
21-year-old Suing relied on his “naturally big appetite” to wolf
down nine bowls and 47 grams of Yoshinoya gyudon. He defeated second
placer Carlo Medrano who consumed nine bowls and .05 grams, and
third placer Dino Yu who ate eight bowls and 39 grams. Suing won the
P70,000 top prize while Medrano and Yu took home P50,000 and
P30,000, respectively.
The 38-year-old Ngo, on the other hand, bested
another tough field of 50 gyudon eaters who competed in the
inaugural “fastest to eat two gyudon beef bowls” category.
Benefiting from his pre-finals “practice meals” at his favorite
Yoshinoya branch, Ngo finished two Yoshinoya gyudon bowls in just
43.69 seconds, besting runners-up Tony Shu (47.69 seconds) and Ian
Cang (49.31 seconds). Ngo won P50,000 while Shu and Cang received
P30,000 and P10,000, respectively.
Awarding the winners’ prizes was Yoshinoya
business unit head Leo Po, together with director for operations
Ricardo Logarta, area manager Lala Habana and marketing manager Tato
Borromeo.
“We’re extremely satisfied with the
excellent turnout and enthusiastic reception for this year’s
Second Yoshinoya Gyudon Eating Contest. We’d like to congratulate
the winners and also thank the huge number of gyudon eaters who took
up Yoshinoya’s challenge and made it another successful event this
year,” said Leo Po.
Overall, more than 1,300 gyudon eaters vied in
the Second Yoshinoya Gyudon Eating Contest that started last
January. The list was pruned down to only the top 50 in each
category for the much-awaited grand finals, which was made more fun
and exciting by the comic hosting of Ariel and Maverick and the
highly charged performance of Itchiworms.
As an exciting prelude to the showdown, guests
were treated to a colorful Cosplay.ph parade; J-music with the
Juujiro J-Culture Organization with Do’Ahou anime band and
Rtschark, a jrock band; a performance by Kadangyan Band; a photo op
with gorgeous Maxim girls and Ran girls; and Cucina Argentina.
Loads of raffle prizes were also given away,
including an LG 22-inch LCD TV, LG DVD player, LG Refrigerators, LG
Microwave Ovens, Nokia cellular phones from Globe, and sports items
from Chris Sports.
This year’s bigger and more exciting gyudon
eat-fest was sponsored by E-games, Coca-Cola, LG Refrigerators and
Microwaves, Chris Sports, Microdata Systems and Management,
Otakuzine Anime Magazine, and SM Mall of Asia with the special
participation of Cosplay.ph, Juujiro J-Culture Organization and
Kadangyan.
