United Opposition and Mayor Jejomar Binay of
Makati said Monday that former president Joseph Estrada will be the
opposition’s last option in the synchronized elections in 2010.
Binay further clarified that the former
President really wanted to have a single opposition candidate to
assure victory in the 2010 presidential elections.
“The former president even though very fit
physically, wanted a single candidate for the opposition in the 2010
elections thus he is working to do just that,” Binay said.
The opposition leader likewise echoed
Estrada’s statement portraying Malacañang as being in a
“state of panic” when it reminded the latter of his promise not
to seek a political position in return for the pardon granted to
him after he was convicted by the Sandiganbayan late last year
on plunder charges.
Binay said the administration is shaking in fear
over the reported candidacy of Estrada, considering that it has no
candidate that can match the opposition.
Estrada likewise had make it clear that his
effort at present is to unite all the stakeholders in the opposition
ranks, and hoped that they will attain their goal of fielding a
single opposition candidate against the administration party.
Many opposition stalwarts have signified their
intention to run for president in the coming polls, but they face
the prospect of running against each other and the
administration’s candidate if no one of them will give way to a
single opposition candidate.
Possible opposition contenders
Among the political personalities identified
with the opposition who are getting favorable results in surveys
include Senate President Manuel Villar and Senators Mar Roxas, Loren
Legarda and Panfilo Lacson.
Binay is also touted as another possible
standard bearer, and has been seen accompanying Estrada in his trips
around Metro Manila and in the provinces. However, Binay remained
coy about his political plans after his term as mayor ends in 2010.
Villar, Roxas and Legarda has been stumping
every nook and cranny in preparation for their contending the
country’s top post in 2010.
Lacson has yet to announce formally his
intentions to run as president. Lacson ran and lost in the 2004
elections but showed a well-organized presidential campaign which he
can mobilize again for 2010.
