Kiamco, Calasang advance

WARREN Kiamco and Elvis Calasang scored back-to-back wins on Sunday to join compatriot and defending champion Ronato Alcano in the knockout stage the 2008 World 8-Ball Championship at the Expo Center in Fujairah City, United Arab Emirates.

Kiamco clobbered Amine Ouahbi of Mauritius, 8-2, and countryman Jeffrey de Luna, 8-5, in Group F.

De Luna, on the other hand earlier sent former WPA World 9-Ball Champion Ralf “Kaiser” Souquet of Germany, 8-5, in the loser’s brackets.

Calasang crushed Ryu Seung Woo of Korea, 8-6, and Au Siu Wai of Hongkong, 8-3, in Group B.

Dennis Orcollo, the world’s top ranked player, won his opening match opposite Muhammed Al Hosani of UAE, 8-4. A win over Mark Gray of England will put him in the knockout stage.

Joven Bustamante, semifinalist last year, became the first Filipino casualty after losing to England’s Darren Appleton, 2-8. He earlier bowed to Sweden’s Marcus “Napoleon” Chamat, 5-8.

Meanwhile, Roberto Gomez and Antonio Gabica failed to sustain the momentum of their victory in the opening round.

Gomez bowed to reigning US Open 9-Ball Champion Shane Van Boening of the United States, 3-8, while Gabica fell to Ruslan Chinakov of Russia, 5-8.
