Govt optimistic of peace in Mindanao

Monitoring team led by Malaysia set to end tour of duty by September

 
DEFENSE Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. sees the planned pull out of the
Malaysian-led International Monitoring Team (IMT) from Mindanao as having an effect on the peace process. However, Teodoro remains optimistic that peace in Mindanao could still be achieved, and that peacetalks between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) can still achieve success.

At Malacañang, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said the administration will seek an extension of the monitoring team’s tour of duty that is overseeing the ceasefire agreement between the government and the MILF, which is set to expire this August.
