Rice sufficiency effort costs govt P80 billion

Price tag equals 1% of economic output for 2008

Government effort to ensure an adequate supply of rice could come at a cost of P80 billion, or 1 percent of the country’s economic output this year, UBS Investment Research said Friday.

Edward Teather, UBS economist, said this tab brought about by a supposed crisis in the country’s staple will affect the government’s plan of ending a decade of budget deficit by posting a balanced budget at the end of the year.
