RALF SOUQUET of Germany dethroned Filipino Ronnie Alcano, 13-9, on
Friday night in the finals of the World 8-Ball Championships at the
Amir Billiards Center in Fujairah City, United Arab Emirates.
Souquet raced to an 8-5 lead which Alcano
trimmed to 8-9. While the Filipino managed to score again, the
German regained his form and steadied his game en route to victory.
The win was a sweet revenge for the German who
was beaten by the Filipino in the final round of the 2006 World
9-Ball Championship held at the Philippine International Convention
Center.
Souquet, a former world champion, earned $60,000
while Alcano settled for $20,000.
Souquet defeated Marcus Chamat of Sweden, 10-8,
to arrange a championship showdown with Alcano, who posted a 10-9
victory over compatriot Dennis Orcollo.
On his way to the finals, Alcano defeated
reigning World 9-ball champion Daryl Peach of England, 10-5,
compatriot Roberto Gomez, 10-8.
For winning the World 8-Ball tournament last
year, Alcano duplicated the feat of compatriot Efren “Bata”
Reyes and Chinese Taipei’s teenage sensation Wu Chia Ching.
